TOWNSVILLE is the premier city in North Queensland. It is the most rapidly growing urban centre in Australia and has a Hindu population of  more than 2000; a few hundreds more Hindus are scattered throughout the rest of North Queensland. We hail mostly from India but a substantial numbers are of Indian ethnic origin from Fiji, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. There are in addition a few local Australians interested in the study and practice of Hindu culture. All of us contribute very positively to the economy as well as to the professional and cultural life of Townsville.

The need for a cultural centre / temple was recognised as early as 2005 by a group of insightful residents. After several exploratory discussions, the first general meeting as the North Queensland Hindu Community Inc. was convened in May 2008 at which a constitution was adopted and an executive committee elected. The primary objective of the NQHC is the establishment of a Sri Ganesha Temple and a Hindu Cultural Centre in Townsville.
